President's Message
Greetings,

Welcome to the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.!
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to aid and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. It was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate phenomenal trendsetting women on the campus of Howard University. From this beginning many chapters across the country were chartered to include the following: United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea, and Canada.
Gamma Eta Chapter, being one of these chapters, was chartered on June 6, 1942, in East St. Louis at the home of Soror Lila Teer through the efforts of Soror Bessie B. Garvin, an educator. Ten sorors became charter members of this chapter. In 1958, Gamma Eta became East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.
This chapter holds the distinction of being the first African American sorority or fraternity ever established in the city of East St. Louis, Illinois. Currently, there are more than 240 active members in the chapter.
The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Educational Development, Political Awareness and Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement.
With a 2024 – 2026 biennial theme of “Building a Stronger Sisterhood to Leave a Brighter Spark Within Our Community,” we welcome you to explore our website as we proudly share who we are and the principles for which we stand.
For Delta sorors, this website is intended to support your needs as a member by providing basic tools and resources for the business of our sorority.

I hope you enjoy your visit to our online “home” and come again!

Sincerely,
Sharon R. Crockett
